National Preservation Month in May is the time of the year when numerous historical societies, the government, and preservation groups join forces to promote the importance of preserving historical places. Property history research gives you a picture of how the history of your property developed through the years. Many of the historical records at the Harris County Archives can be used to support this purpose including, but not limited to, maps, tax records, city directories, voting records, abstracts, and photographs. A selection of sources on this webpage can serve as a research guide for historical properties in Harris County.

A. E. Amerman Collection

A collection of 71 nitrate negatives which appear to have been taken during a trip to New York State, probably in 1907. Of interest are cityscapes of New York City from the harbor, travels up the Hudson River, and views of Niagra Falls.

Women Professionals in Government

Since 1981, the Women Professionals in Government (WPG) has played a critical role in the advancement of member women professionals. WPG provides a forum for female professionals to hear key speakers and maximize networking opportunities. All women with positions in city, county, state, or federal government are welcome.

The Harris County Archives contains historic records from county offices, departments, and committees, as well as private donations related to the work of county organizations, projects, and former officials.  Contained in the collection are the records of over 80 Harris County departments, the County Attorney’s Office, former County Commissioners, and former County Judges. Property-related resources include the Assessor and Collector of Taxes records, Abstracts of Title, and right-of-way deed records. 

 

The Harris County Clerk's Office Records Archives contains records that have been recorded in the Office of the Harris County Clerk; mostly pre-dating 1961. The custody of certain records from other offices in the county may also be transferred to the HCCO Archives per state statutes. Records held in this Archives include deeds, plat maps, birth records, marriage licenses, road maps, Probate Court records, Commissioner Court minutes, contracts, military discharge records, County Surveyor’s records, and registered trademarks and brands.

 

The Harris County District Clerk's Office is the keeper of the historical records. Documents dating from 1837 to 1925 are available for viewing in the Charles Bacarisse Historical Documents Room. These court records are valuable sources of Texas' and Harris County's history and include documents dating back to the Republic of Texas such as case files, accounting books, and bound volumes including criminal case indexes, minutes books, and fee docket books.

 

HCPL Digital Archive is an online archives of historical and cultural materials that illustrate the continuing story of the library, our partners, and our community.  Our collections are curated by the Harris County Archives and the Harris County Public Library. 

 

TARO (Texas Archival Resources Online) makes descriptions of the rich archival, manuscript, and museum collections in repositories across the state available to the public. The site consists of the collection descriptions or "finding aids" that archives, libraries, and museums create to assist users in locating information in their collections.
